Since there is no snow down at the club, David and I decided to go down and fix a couple of things on Arioso that went bad at the end of the season.
The fuel gauge had started showing empty even when there was lots of fuel in the tank. I was pretty sure that something had happened to the fuel sender since the wiring all looked OK, and the gauge would twitch up a bit when power was applied to the instrument panel. I removed the sender and found that the rod holding the float had shifted up and was binding against the top of the plastic moulding. I pulled this back down and placed a little epoxy putty on the rod to prevent it from shifting up again.
While I was at it I took the opportunity to examine the inside of the tank. I was afraid it would be full of all kind of junk, but it was surprisingly clean!
The next job was to replace the padeye on the boom that had broken during the gale at the end of last season. The plate on the old one was threaded and that padeye had been installed from inside the boom. The new padeye that I found was not threaded and the eye was somewhat smaller. The plate from the old padeye was inserted into the boom and used as a backing plate, and the new one attached from the outside putting the screws into the internal threaded stainless steel backing plate. In order to do this I had to drill out the eyes on the new padeye a bit, and Red brought down the 3/8" drill bit I needed. We used the drill press in the shop. It was finicky work using a piece of small stuff and some tape to position the backing plate so that we could screw down the new padeye, but we eventually go it done.l This should be plenty strong.
Time will tell. It turned out that the shackle would not pass through the smaller eye on the padeye, and so we took it to the shop and ground it down just a little.
